Is the accusation of one of the Sunnite website pertaining to the idolatry of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in pre-Islamic era is true?




My dear brothers of the institute of Valiasr, today, I referred to a Sunnite website news and I saw this point pertaining to Imam Ali (peace be upon him). has Imam Ali worshiped Lat and Oza that now they have to deny them and was the holy prophet of GOD was fearful for Ali not to retell his own secret to the unbelievers and do you consider this narration from Eshaq as an authentic narration or not?

The Sunnite news has mentioned that;

Ali belief in Islam

Ibn Eshaq says that; one day then holy prophet of GOD and his wife Khadijah was praying then Ali came to them and asked the holy prophet of GOD that what this act that you are doing it? The holy prophet of GOD state that; this is the same selected religion of GOD to which He appointed His own apostles and I want you to worship Allah the Almighty (the one GOD) and to reject Lot and Oza and then  Ali said that; this is something new that I have never heard it before and I am going to ask for my father’s advice and the holy prophet of GOD who did not like his secret become clear prior to the public announcement stated to Ali that; if you do not want to believe in that then keep this secret

And Ali spent that night but Allah the Almighty unveiled the truth of Islam in his heart and the next morning very soon he came in the presence of the holy prophet of GOD and declared his faith in Islam and after that he was along with the holy prophet anywhere and he was praying with His Holiness in a hidden manner and he did not declared his own faith in Islam according to the recommendation of the holy prophet of GOD

unfortunately, some of the Sunnites who are the enemy of Ahl Al-Bayt- are not able to hidden their own enmity and make efforts to wesken the standing of Ahl Al-Bayt as well as to  cause a negative impact on the others toward Ahl Al-Bayt via the manipulation of the historical events

يُرِيدُونَ لِيُطْفِئُوا نُورَ اللَّهِ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَاللَّهُ مُتِمُّ نُورِهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْكَافِرُونَ

They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will averse

Throughout history, there are various instances that some people made some alterations of the truth in order to cause a similarity between to individuals or two groups or bring close together their dignity and standing and even if it was possible they have manipulated some virtues for their own beloved group and if in spite of these efforts they could not fulfill their own purposes once again the y made some distortions of the truth or weakened the standing of the opposite side

And the Sunnite books are not exceptional pertaining to this case and there can be see lots of lies and false virtues or accusations which have been attributed to the great figures of Islam and their real purpose is to bring about equality between those two sides

 It is interesting that, in order to elevate the position of the Qaliphs when they do not see an y authentic narration in their own books then they resort to their own weak narrations and they do the same thing in the aim of weakening the standing of Ahl Al-Bayt and the holy prophet of GOD

Ibn Abi Hadid says under the same discussion (the faith of the commander of the faithful and its contrast to the faith of Abu Bakr) that

ثم رأينا جميع المختلفين قد حاولوا نقض فضائله ، ووجهوا الحيل والتأويلات نحوها ، من خارجي مارق ، وناصب حنق ، وثابت مستبهم ، وناشئ معاند ، ومنافق مكذب ، وعثماني حسود ، يعترض فيها ويطعن ، ومعتزلي قد نقض في الكلام ، وابصر علم الاختلاف ، وعرف الشبه ومواضع الطعن وضروب التأويل ، قد التمس الحيل في ابطال مناقبه وتأول مشهور فضائله ، فمرة يتأولها بما لا يحتمل ، ومرة يقصد أن يضع من قدرها بقياس منتقض ، ولا يزداد مع ذلك الا قوة ورفعة ، ووضوحا واستنارة ، وقد علمت أن معاوية ويزيد ومن كان بعدهما من بنى مروان أيام ملكهم - وذلك نحو ثمانين سنة - لم يدعوا جهدا في حمل الناس على شتمه ولعنه واخفاء فضائله ، وستر مناقبه وسوابقه .

I see that most of the groups intended to weaken his virtues and most of them have set forth numerous accusations and tricks to his virtues some of the Khavarej who are apostate and some resentful Nasebis and some so-called as the believers who wrongly realized Islam and the man who grew up with his enmity and a hypocrite who presents false claim against him and the advocates of Othman who are jealous of Ali then they have called into question His holiness’ virtues as well as have made opposition to them and Motazalah who are able to defeat the others in debates and are informed of the way of division and are aware of the religious doubts, the problems and their interpretations then he will be another man who makes efforts to weaken and distort his virtues and precedence and sometimes he interprets that in such a manner that is in contrary to Kalam and sometimes he presents the opposite thing to underestimate his standing but in spite of these efforts they only unveil the truth of his precedence and superiority as well as to intensify the light of his spirituality and nothing else and you know that Moaviah,Yazid and those who came after them – from Bani Omayah-  have made their all efforts during 80 years and forced the people to insult and curse His Holiness as well as they veiled their precedence and weakened his backgrounds and virtues

One of the insulting cases is a point that has been quoted in some of the Sunnite books (and their own websites) such as the book of Ibn Kathir and so on and they are trying to pretend via that point that the commander of the faithful (peace be upon him) was an idolater in his childhood

It is interesting that, when the discussion pertaining to the faith of the commander of the faithful (peace be upon him) as the first Moslem is presented then the y set forth his little age and say that; he was only a child and a little child faith is not acceptable and when they provide this false narration pertaining to the idolatry of the commander of the faithful then they do not add this question that how was he an idol worshipper and the holy prophet of GOD has defined the rejection of the idolatry as the prerequisite to accepting of Islam


Ibn Kathir and all of those who narrated this saying have drawn thin from Syrah of Ibn Eshaq

اسلام علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه

نا أحمد (بن عبد الجبار ) حدثني يونس (بن بکير) عن ابن اسحاق (محمد بن اسحاق بن يسار ) قال ثم ان علي بن أبي طالب جاء بعد ذلك بيومين فوجدهما يصليان فقال علي ما هذا يا محمد فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم دين الله الذي اصطفى لنفسه وبعث به رسله فأدعوك الى الله وحده والى عبادته وكفر باللات والعزى فقال له علي هذا أمر لم أسمع به قبل اليوم فلست بقاض أمرا حتى أحدث أبا طالب فكره رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يفشي عليه سره قبل أن يستعلن أمره فقال له يا علي اذا لم تسلم فاكتم فمكث علي تلك الليله ثم أن الله أوقع في قلب علي الاسلام فأصبح غاديا الى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى جاءه فقال ما عرضت علي يا محمد فقال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تشهد أن لا اله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وتكفر باللات والعزى

At first we are going to talk little about the book Syrah Ibn Eshaq


The view of Ibn Taymyah pertaining to this book

Ibn Taymyah says pertaining of the book itself that

ولكن في نفس السيرة وقع غلط في مواضع وأحاديث

In the book Syrah itself (and not in the narrations from it) there are some errors in the narrations and its subjects

-Al-Javab Al-Sahih, v 3 p 34

The completion of this problem by Mohammad IbN Jaber Al-Vadi

Mohammad Ibn Jaber Al-Vadi who died in 749 Hejrah says in his own book pertaining to the completion of the problem of Ibn Taymyah about the book Syrah Ibn Eshaq that

ولم يتحقق هذا الكتاب لضياع ثبته منه

This book is not available since Abu Eshaq himself has lost the book

-Ketab Al-Al-Barnamej, p 219

And he added that he has not given his book to anyone else and the quotation of this book has been undertaken orally by himself and it is mean that all of the quotations of the book has been undertaken orally and with no proof


The proof of the narration of Ibn Eshaq is as follow

Ahmad (Ibn Abd Al-Jabar) has quoted from Yunes (Ibn Bokayr) from Ibn Eshaq (Mohammad Ibn Eshaq Ibn Yasar)


It has been said in the book Taqrib Al-Tahzib that

أحمد بن عبد الجبار بن محمد العطاردي أبو عمر الكوفي ضعيف

Ahmad Ibn Abd Al-Jabar Ibn Mohammad Atarodi is a weak narrator

-Taghrib Al-Tahzib, v 1 p 81

قال عبد الرحمن بن أبي حاتم كتبت عنه وأمسكت عن الرواية عنه لكثرة كلام الناس فيه وقال محمد بن عبد الله الحضرمي كان يكذب وقال الحاكم أبو عبد الله الحافظ ليس بالقوي عندهم تركه أبو العباس أحمد بن محمد بن سعيد يعني بن عقدة وقال أبو أحمد بن عدي رأيت أهل العراق مجمعين على ضعفه وكان أحمد بن محمد بن سعيد لا يحدث عنه لضعفه

Abd Al-Rahman Ibn Abi Hatam says that; I have written the narrations from him but I did not quoted them since I heard a lot about him by the people and Mohammad Ibn Abd Allah Hazrami has said that; he was a liar and Hakem Nayshaburi has said that; he was not an able narrator and Abu Abbass Ahmad Ibn Mohammad Ibn Saeed (Ibn Oqdah) has ignored him and Ahmad Ibn Mohammad Ibn Saeed has not quoted from him due to his weakness in narrations

-Tahzib Al-Kamal, v 1 p 379

Ibn Jozi has mentioned his name in his book Zoafa pertaining to the weak narrators as well


He is also accused in the quotation of the book Syrah and Zahabi Dameshqi says pertaining to him that

يونس بن بكير ابو بكر الشيباني الحافظ عن هشام بن عروة والأعمش وابن إسحاق وعنه أبو كريب وابن نمير والعطاردي قال بن معين صدوق وقال أبو داود ليس بحجة يوصل كلام بن إسحاق بالأحاديث مات 199 د ت ق م تبعا

Ibn Moin considers him as truthful man and Abu Davud has said that he is not trustworthy since he has mixed the remark of Ibn Eshaq with the narration (he does Edraj and it is the worst kind of distortions)

Ibn Eshaq himself was born in the year 80 Hejrah and therefore all of the narrations which have been quoted in that book with no proof are Morsal and this problem is in addition to his weakness and his weak points have -Al-Kamel Fi Al-Zoafa Ibn Ada, v 6 p 102, no 1623

-Al-Zoafa Al-Kabir Aghili, v 4 p 24, no1578

-Al-Zoafa Al-Matrukin, Ibn Jozi, v 3 p 41, no 2883

been mentioned in the below books 


Thus to set forth such an accusation against the commander of the faithful via such a proof is the absolute impudence


All knows that when the Sunnite scholars are going to talk about the commander of the faithful (peace be upon him) have use the phrase ‘’ Ali Ibn Abi Taleb ع

In the contrary to the other companions which say pertaining to them that ‘’may GOD be pleased with him’’

And when we ask them pertaining to this issue that what is the real intent of this phrase they respond that since he has never worshiped idols and never put his forehead on the ground for them since he has grown under the care of loving of the holy prophet of GOD and he has accepted His Holiness’ faith as his own faith as well

 And now pay attention to narration which has been quoted by Shiites as well as Sunnites pertaining to this case that

سباق الأمم ثلاثة لم يكفروا بالله طرفة عين علي بن أبي طالب وصاحب يس ومؤمن آل فرعون .

The pioneers of the nations are three men that never lost their own faith in Allah even in a twinkle an eye; Ali Ibn Abi Tleb, Saheb Yasin and Momen  of the Pharaoh dynasty

-Al-Kashef, v 4 p 12, no 934

And the same narration has been quoted in the below books and they have referred to that as well

-Al-Moharer Al-Vajiz Fi Tafsir Al-Ketab Al-Aziz, v 4 p 450

-Tafsir Al-Ghartabi, v 15 p 20

-Ruh Al-Maani, v 22 p 225

-Tafsir Ibn Arabi, v 2 p 165

-Tafsir Al-Bahr Al-Mohit, v 7 p 314

-Tafsir Al-Thalabi, v 8 p 126

And even it has been quoted from some of the Sunnites that they have said that there is no need to talk about the faith of the commander of the faithful (peace be upon him) since he was with the holy prophet of GOD and he has followed His Holiness in the whole affairs and no one has said that the holy prophet of GOD became Moslem since His Holiness never was an unbeliever to become Moslem

أقول قال بعض متأخري أصحابنا ... أما على بن أبي طالب فلم يكن مشركا بالله أبدا لأنه كان مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في كفالته كأحد أولاده يتبعه في جميع أموره فلم يحتج أن يدعى للإسلام فيقال أسلم هذا

One of our recent scholars has said that; … and pertaining to Ali Ibn Abi Taleb who has never be unbeliever to Allah the Almighty since he was permanently along with the holy prophet of GOD as well as His Holiness’ care just like one of His Holiness’ son and he has followed the holy prophet of GOD in the whole affairs thus there is no need for him to claim he is a believer until we say he became Moslem

Pertaining to this case His holiness himself states in Nahj Al-Balaqah in the discourse No 192 called as the discourse of Qaseah that

وَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ مَوْضِعِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللّهِ صَلَّى‏اللّهُ‏عَلَيْهِ‏وَآلِهِ‏وَسلَّم بِالْقَرَابَةِ الْقَرِيبَةِ، وَالْمَنْزِلَةِ الْخَصِيصَةِ.

You know about my close relationship and relative ties to the holy prophet of GOD (peace and bless of GOD be upon him and his progeny) as well as my eminent standing and dignity


وَضَعَنِي فِي حِجْرِهِ وَأَنَا وَلَدٌ (وليدٌ) يَضُمُّنِي إِلَى‏ صَدْرِهِ، وَيَكْنُفُنِي فِي فِرَاشِهِ، وَ يُمِسُّنِي جَسَدَهُ، وَيُشِمُّنِي عَرْفَهُ. وَكَانَ يَمْضَغُ الشَّيْ‏ءَ ثُمَّ يُلْقِمُنِيهِ.

The holy prophet of GOD was placed me in his own room while I was a little child he hugged me and he caused me to sleep in His Holiness’ special bed and he held me tight in his arms and caused me to smell his delightful perfume and sometimes he put some food in my mouth in pieces


 وَمَا وَجَدَ لِي كَذْبَةً فِي قَوْلٍ، وَلَا خَطْلَةً فِي‏فِعْلٍ.

His Holiness never heard a lie from me or a mistake in my actions


وَ لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَتَّبِعُهُ اتِّبَاعَ الْفَصِيلِ أَثَرَ أُمِّهِ، يَرْفَعُ لِي فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِهِ عَلَماً ، وَ يَأْمُرُنِي بِالْإِقْتِدَاءِ بِهِ.

I was always along with the holy prophet of GOD just like a child who is with his mother everywhere. And the holy prophet of GOD (peace and bless of GOD be upon him and his progeny) has revealed a new sign of the good morals each day and also His Holiness has ordered me to follow him


وَ لَقَدْ كَانَ يُجَاوِرُ فِي كُلِّ سَنَةٍ بِحِرَاءَ (حرّاء) فَأَرَاهُ، وَلَا يَرَاهُ غَيْرِي.

The holy prophet of GOD (peace and bless of GOD be upon him and his progeny) was spending several months in the cave of Hara and only I was seeing him and no one except me was seeing him


وَ لَمْ يَجْمَعْ بَيْتٌ وَاحِدٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ غَيْرَ رَسُولِ اللّهِ صَلَّى‏اللّهُ‏عَلَيْهِ‏وَآلِهِ‏وَسلَّم وَ خَدِيجَةَ وَ أَنَا ثَالِثُهُمَا.

At those days Islam has not still arrived at any house except the house of the holy prophet of GOD and Khadijah was in that house as well and I was the third of them


أَرَى‏ نُورَ الْوَحْيِ وَالرِّسَالَةِ، وَأَشُمُّ رِيحَ النُّبُوَّةِ. وَلَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَنَّةَ (رَنَة) الشَّيْطَانِ حِينَ نَزَلَ الْوَحْيُ عَلَيْهِ صَلَّى‏اللّهُ‏عَلَيْهِ‏وَآلِهِ‏وَسلَّم.

فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ مَا هذِهِ الرَّنَّةُ؟ فَقَالَ: «هذَا الشَّيْطَانُ قَدْ أَيِسَ مِنْ عِبَادَتِهِ»

I was able to see the light of the revelation and the prophecy and also was smelling the perfume of the prophecy and I heard the cry of the Devil when the revelation sent down on the holy prophet of GOD (peace and bless of GOD be upon him and his progeny) and I said that O the holy prophet of GOD what is this cry? His Holiness stated that this is Satan who has become disappointed from being worshiped

This narration explicitly emphasizes that His Holiness has witnessed the first revelation to the holy prophet of GOD and also heard the cry of Satan and indeed the narration of the Sunnite that His Holiness was a newly Moslem only after seeing the prayer of the holy prophet of GOD and Khadijah is a lie

And then His Holiness states a point which is more significant than what have been said


إِنَّكَ تَسْمَعُ مَا أَسْمَعُ، وَتَرَى‏ مَا أَرَى‏، إِلَّا أَنَّكَ لَسْتَ بِنَبِيٍّ، وَ لكِنَّكَ لَوَزِيرٌ وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى‏ خَيْرٍ».

And His Holiness stated that; O Ali, you hear what I hear and you see what I see except that you are not the prophet rather than you are my minister and moving unto the right path

Is it possible that the commander of the faithful can see the light of the revelation and realize what have been revealed to the holy prophet of GOD and then he come and ask His Holiness what are you doing along with Khadijah

It is interesting that Ibn Abi Hadid after the quotation of this narration from the commander of the faithful (peace be upon him) refers to narration from Mosnad Ahmad to emphasize that but we cannot find it in the Mosnad of Ahmad

واما رنة الشيطان ، فروى أبو عبد الله أحمد بن حنبل في مسنده ، عن علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام ، قال كنت مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله صبيحة الليلة التي أسرى به فيها ، وهو بالحجر يصلى ، فلما قضى صلاته ، وقضيت ، صلاتي سمعت رنة شديدة ، فقلت يا رسول الله ، ما هذه الرنة قال الا تعلم هذه رنة الشيطان ، علم انى أسرى بي الليلة إلى السماء ، فأيس من أن يعبد في هذه الأرض .

But the cry of Satan, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal has quoted from Ali Ibn Abi Taleb in his own Mosnad that in the morning of the night in which the holy prophet of GOD was elevated to heaven he was praying in the Hajr Esmael and when he finished his prayer and when my prayer was finished as well then I heard the cry of Satan and I said that what is this cry O the holy prophet of GOD? His Holiness stated that; you do not know this is the cry of Satan and he knows that I have been elevated to heaven and he is disappointed that no one will worship him on the earth

-Sharh Nahaj Al-Balaghe, Ibn Abi Al-Hadid, v 13 p 209

And with these introductions and after mentioning that the commander of the faithful has grown up under the care of the holy prophet of GOD (peace and bless of GOD be upon him and his progeny) and Hi Holiness was in charge of his training then it can be evident that the accusation of worshiping of the idols Lot, Oza by the commander of the faithful in his childhood indeed is the accusation to the holy prophet of GOD since this accusation means that we say the holy prophet of GOD was an unbeliever prior to the revelation and the commander of the faithful has followed His Holiness as well and it has to be said that the holy prophet of GOD was carless in the upbringing of a child who was responsible for his care and he has grown up as an unbeliever and in any way this is an insult to the holy prophet of GOD
