Question & Answer » Imamat and Caliphate
Is there any Sunni scholar who believes that “Imamate” is amongst the principles of religion?

 Response:

One of faults that followers of “Saqifah” doctrine always find with Shias is that why you believe that Imamate is one of the principles of religion? What is your reason?

Of course this fact that Imamate is one of the principles of religion must be discussed in another place comprehensively.

But what interesting is that many of Sunni scholars have said explicitly that Imamate is one of the principles of religion or they’ve said issues in this regard which means they’ve accepted such belief; but when it comes to the Imamate of commander of the faithful Ali [AS] and Shias’ belief, they don’t know Imamate as one of principle and find fault with it, such as “Mr. Ibn Khaldun”, he says:

Doubt of Shias in this field is that Imamate is amongst the principles of religion; this is amongst their hallucinations; but it’s not what they think it is; but Imamate is a public interest that has been abdicated to the opinion of people and if it were one of the principles of religion, its dignity would be like prayer.

Ibn Khaldun” – Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldun – vol. 1, p 212

But on the other hand, when it comes to the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar”, their opinion changes completely and claim that Imamate and caliphate are amongst principle of religion.

Many of Sunni scholars have said this issue that we mention to some of them:

Caliphate is one the pillars of religion:

Ibn Abd al-Barr”, “Shahab al-Din Nuwayri” and “Ali bin Mahmud Khuza’i” have claimed explicitly that caliphate is one of the pillars of religion:

Messenger of god appointed “Abu-Bakr” as his successor!!! because there are clear reasons showing Prophet [PBUH]’s affection towards “Abu-Bakr” and he also appointed “Abu-Bakr” as the next caliph by metaphor that was like affirmation, but he didn’t say it explicitly; because god hadn’t ordered him to do so and about religion, messenger of god [PBUH] doesn’t do anything unless he is revealed to and caliphate is one of the principles of religion.

Ibn Abd al-Barr”- al-Istiab fi Ma’rifat al-Ashab- vol. 3, p 969 /// Al-NuwayriNihayat al-Arab fi Funun al Adab – vol. 19, p 14 // “Al-Khuza’i”- Takhrij al-Dalalat al-Sam’iyyah- vol. 1, p 44

Qurtubi”, well-known mufassir writes about this verse «

This verse is legitimate evidence that shows that it’s obligatory that Imam and caliph are appointed and people should listen to him and obey him until unity is made and caliph’s orders are carried out. And amongst elders or nation no one doubts this issue … and our reason is this verse:

And this verse:

And also this verse

It means that god places on the earth a caliph, and also other verses…

When “Abu-Bakr was dying, he abdicated Imamate to “Umar” and no one told him that this act is not obligatory to you or us. These reasons show that this act is obligatory and is one of the principles of religion that Muslims’ survival depends on it.

“Al-Ansary Qurtubi” – Al-Jami’ al-Ahkam al-Quran {Tafsir Qurtubi}, vol. 1, p 265

Other Sunni scholars have quoted this issue from him in their books. Such as: “Tamimi Hanbali” and “Shanqiti”:

“Al-Tamimi Hanbali” – Fawakih al-Azab, vol. 1, p 212 /// “Al-Shanqiti”- Azwa’ al-Bayan fi Izah al-Quran bi al-Quran, vol. 1, p 21

Imamate is amongst the principles of religion and opposing it is blasphemy and Bid’ah:

Many of Sunni scholars have said that Imamate is one of the principles of religion and opposing it is blasphemy and bid’ah {innovation in religion}.

1: Bayzawi:

Bayzawi is amongst well-known Sunni scholars. He has a book about methodology which is amongst most fundamental methodology books, that’s why more than 40 descriptions book have been written about this book, he says in this book:

Shias claim that narrative implies the Imamate of “Ali” {may god be pleased of him}, but these narratives are not mutawatir {hadith whose words are narrated by such a large number}  ; as the narratives indicates saying “Iqama” are not mutawatir {the word iqama or ikamet refers to the second call to Islamic Prayer, given immediately before the prayer begins} or the narrative related to saying “In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful” {that we say it loudly or slowly} in prayer is not mutawatir; or Prophet [PBUH]’s miracles are not mutawatir, we say in response unlike Imamate first two things {Iqama and saying in the name of god in prayer loudly or slowlyare not amongst principles of religion and opposing them wouldn’t cause blasphemy or bid’ah, but Prophet [PBUH]’s miracles are not mutawatir because a few guys saw them!

These sentences show clearly that he believes that Imamate is amongst principles of religion and says that opposing this issue causes blasphemy or bid’ah.

Many of the exegetes of this book have confirmed this issue that we’ll mention to them.

2: Muhammad Abu al-Nur Zahir

He writes in his book:

The response of most of scholars to Shia’s doubt is that there wasn’t much motive for quoting saying “Iqama” and “in the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful” {loudly or slowly} in prayer! Because there aren’t amongst main “Ahkam” and if someone opposes them he won’t be infidel or bid’ah creator; but Imamate is amongst principles of religion and opposing it will cause blasphemy and bid’ah!.

3: Sheikh al-Islam Ali bin abd al-Kafi Sabki

He writes:

{Author} says in response that “Iqama” and saying “In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful” in prayer {that we say it loudly or slowlyaren’t amongst principles of religion and opposing them wouldn’t cause blasphemy and bid’ah, that’s why there wasn’t much motive for quoting them, but Imamate is one of the principles of religion and opposing it is bid’ah and causes sedition.

4: Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Bidakhshi

He confirms this issue in his book:

5: “Fakhr al-Din Ahmad bin Hasan bin Yusuf al-Jabirdi

He says such issue in his book either:

6: “Shams al-Din Mahmud bin abd ar-Rahman Isfahani:

He confirms this matter in his book as well:

Anyone who denies the caliphate of any ruler that guy is infidel!

One of sentences that clearly shows the belief of Sunni towards ruler is excommunicating those who deny Imamate and caliphate of a king or ruler, if Imamate and caliphate aren’t amongst the principles of religion, how can denying them cause blasphemy?!

Ibn Atiyyah” quotes from “Abu Muhammad Sahl bin abd Allah”:

Anyone who denies the Imamate of a sultan, that guy is infidel!

“Muhammad bin Ali bin Atiyyah”- Quot al-Quloob fi Mu’amilah al-Mahbub - vol. 2, p 210

This issue has been quoted from him in other books as well:

“Al-Ghazali” – reviving religion science – vol. 4, p 99 // “Al-Manawi” – Feiz al-Qadir Sharh Jami’ al-Saqir- vol. 2, p 455

The denier of the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” is infidel:

Another Fatwa that implies this belief amongst Sunnis is that they say explicitly that the one who denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” is infidel, there are many issues in this regard that we mention to some of them:

1: Ibn Abidin Hanafi

It’s written in “Al-Fath” book that anyone who denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr” or “Umar”, that person is infidel.

Ibn Abidin” – Hashiyah radd al-Mukhtar alaa al-Durr al-Maukhtar- vol. 1, p 561

2: “Abd al-Kafi Sabki”:

It’s written in “Al-Kulasah” book which is one of Hanafis’ books: “Anyone who denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr”, that person is infidel.

“Al-Sabki”- Fataawa of al-Sabki- vol. 2, p 576

3: “Ibn Hajar Haythami”:

Madhab of “Abu-Hanifah” is that if someone denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr” or “Umar bin Khattab”, that guy is infidel, of course some have quoted different issues in this regard, but they’ve said that correct opinion is that he’s infidel.

This issue is written in Hanafis’ books such as: “Ghayat” from “Suruji”, “Fataawa Zahirriyyah” and “Al-Asl” from Muhammad bin Hassan… and if someone denies the caliphate of “Umar”, correct opinion is that he is infidel, but most of scholars have not talked his caliphate.

Ibn Hajar Al-Haythami” - Al-Sawa’iq Al-Muhriqah- vol. 1, p 138

4: Al-Shaykh Nizam:

The denier of the Imamate of “Abu-Bakr” is infidel, but some say that such person is Bid’ah creator not infidel, and correct pinion is that he’s infidel, same goes for the denier of Umar’s caliphate, this is what’s written in Al-Zahiriyyah book.

“Al-Shaikh Nizam”- al-Fataawa al-Hindiyyah- vol. 2, p 264

5: Abu Sa’id al-Khademi

It’s written in “Zahiriyyah” book that correct opinion is that the denier of Abu-Bakr’s Imamate is infidel, same goes for the denier of Umar’s caliphate.

“Al-Khademi”- Bariqah Mamudiyyah- vol. 2, p 104

6: Siwasi

Amongst Rafizi guys if someone knows “Ali” better than former caliphs that guy is Bid’ah maker, and if he denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr” or “Umar”, he is infidel.

“Al-Siwasi”- description of Fath al-Qadir- vol. 1, p 350

7: Ibn Najim Hanafi

If a Rafizi person {Sunni and Wahhabis call Shia Rafezi} believes that “Ali” has superiority over others, that person is bid’ah creator and if he denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr”, he’s infidel.

8: Kalibuli

If a Rafizi person believes that “Ali” has superiority over caliphs, that person is bid’ah maker {the one who innovate in religion} and if he denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr”, he’s infidel.

Kalibuli” – Majma’ al-Anhar fi Sharh Multaqi al-Abhar – vol. 1, p 163

The denier of the Imamate of “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” is infidel

1: Ali bin abd al-Kafi Sabki

He writes:

I saw in “Fataawa of Badi’yyah” book which is one of Hanafis’ books that Rafezi has been divided to infidel and non-infidel and differences had been quoted about the “Hukm” of some of them, but as for the one who denies the Imamate of “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar”, it had said that “The correct opinion is that he is infidel”, and there is no doubt that it happens when he just denies their imamate without swearing at them!

“Al-Sabki” – Fataawa al-Sabki- vol. 2, p 576

He also says in another place:

When “Abu Hanifah” says that the denier of the imamate of “Abu-Bakr” is infidel, naturally the one who swears at him is infidel as well, and apparently the evidence of this excommunication is that this person opposes consensus, because the “Hukm” of the one who is against consensus is infidelity {that guy is infidel}, and this issue is well-known amongst methodology scholars.

“Al-Sabki” – Fataawa al-Sabki – vol. 2, p 588

Ibn Hajar Haythami” has quoted this issue in “Al-Sawa’iq al-Muhriqah” book, vol. 1, p 145.

2: Abd al-Wahhab bin Ali Sabki

It’s written in “Al-Kulasah” book which is one of Hanafis’ books that it’s written in “Al-Asl” book: “Anyone who denies the caliphate of “Abu-Bakr”, he’s infidel” and it’s written in “Al-Fataawa al-Badi’iyyah” book which is one of Hanafis’ book that anyone who denies the imamate of “Abu-Bakr”, that person is infidel, apparently they’ve given such fatwa following their Imam “Abu Hanifah”.

“Al-Sabki” – fataawa al-Sabki- vol. 2, p 576 – 587

3: Ibn Hajar Haythami

In “Fataawa al-Badi’iyyah” book Rafizah has been divided to two parts, infidel, non-infidel, it’s written in there that correct opinion is that the denier of the imamate of “Abu-Bakr” is infidel!

Ibn Hajar Haythami” – vol. 1- p 138

4: al-Sheikh Nizam

Anyone who denies the imamate of “Abu-Bakr”, he is infidel, but some say that he’s bid’ah maker not infidel; but correct opinion is that he’s infidel!

“Al-Sheikh Nizam” – al-Fataawa al-Hindiyyah- vol. 2, p 264

5: Abu Sa’id Khadimi

“Al-Khademi”- Bariqah Mahmudiyyah- vol. 2, p 104

Anyone who doesn’t know “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” as guide Imams, that person will be killed!

“Al-Duhahabi” and other Sunni scholars have said:

“Imam Muhhamad bin Ali bin Sahl” says: I heard of ibn Jajarir {Tabari} who said: if someone says that “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” aren’t guide Imams, that guy will be killed.

“Al-Duhahabi Shafi’i”- Tazkirah al-Huffaz- vol. 2, p 712 /// “Al-Asqalani Shafi’i”- Lisan al-Mizan, vol. 5, p 101 /// “Al-Duhahabi Shafi’i” – Siyar al-A’lam al-Nubala’ – vol. 14, p 275

After Prophet [PBUH], “Abu-bakr” and “Umar” are the origin of religion! And holding grudge against them is blasphemy!

Rafezi guys have grudge towards “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” in their heart, because they believe that they oppressed “Ali bin abi Talib” but it’s wrong and “Ali bin abi Talib” didn’t have such belief!

So, this belief of Rafizi causes fault in religion; because after Prophet [PBUH], “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” are the principles {of religion}; and this is the reason that Rafizi guys are infidel; because they have enmity towards “Abu-Bakr” and “Umar” and swear at them!

“Al-Sabki” – Fataawa al-Sabki- vol. 2, p 576

If you {Sunnis} believe that Imamate of “Umar” and “Abu-Bakr” is not one the principles of religion, so, what’s the meaning of all this excommunication and giving the fatwa of killing opponents?
