Why is Ali [AS] called “the divider of hell and paradise?

Translated by: Muhammad hassan heidary

Why is Ali [AS] called “the divider of hell and paradise?

This sentence has been quoted in many narratives from prophet [PBUH] about Imam Ali [AS]]:

It’s been quoted from “Abdullah ibn Abbas”that prophet [PBUH] said: O’ people! Indeed Ali [AS] is the divider of hell, one who is his supporter and friend won’t go to the hell, and anyone who is his enemy won’t be  survived of it, indeed he’s the divider of paradise his enemy can’t enter it and his friends won’t be deprived of it.

Sheikh Sadooq, Amali, p 83

Imam “Reza” [AS] said: prophet Muhammad [PBUH] said: O’ Ali, indeed you’re the divider of hell and paradise

Seikh Mufid, Amali, p 213

“Suleiman ibn Khalid” quotes from Imam “Sadeq” [AS]: Prophet said to Ali [AS]: you’re the divider of paradise and hell, no one can enter paradise unless those whom you know them and they know you [your real Shiite], and anyone who denies you and you deny him will go to the hell.

This narrative is written in following resources, in different forms, such as: the divider of hell and paradise, the divider of hell, divider of paradise and hell, greeting to you, the divider of hell and paradise:

Kafi Koleini vol. 4, p. 570, meaning  of narratives, from: al-Sheikh Saduq p. 206, Refinement of Laws from: Sheikh Tusi vol. 6, p. 29, Al mustarsehd, Tabari p. 264, Amali, Sheikh Mufid Page 213,  amali, Sheikh Tusi Page 305 and 629 , Al ehtejaj, Tabarsi vol. 1, p. 209 and 341, the virtues,  Ibn ashub, vol. 2, p. 8 and v 3, p. 28, Al taraef, seyed ibn tavoos.

This narrative is written in different Sunni resources, though, some of fanatics have tried to find fault with it, but since this narrative is in vocabulary books and have been quoted in Sunni books with numerous documents, what excuse-seekers say about this narrative will be meaningless. Let’s take a look at Sunni resources:

Al-faeq fi qarib Al hadith, zemakhshari, v 3, p 97

Ali [AS] said: I’m the divider of hell and paradise.

The description of Naj Al Balaqah, Ibn Abi Al hadid, v 2, p 260

And it’s been quoted from “A’mash” that “ebayah” said: I heard from Ali [AS] that I’m the divider of hell.

Al bedayah and Al nahayah, v 7, p 392

It’s been quoted from Ali [AS] who said: I’m the divider of “Hell”, when day of resurrection comes up, I’ll say [to hell] this [person] for you and this [person] for me.

The reason of this denomination

Some narratives have said the reason of this denomination:

The reasons of Sharia, v 1, p 162

“Mufazzal ibn Omar” says: I told Imam Sadeq [AS], why is commander of faithful [AS] called “the divider of hell and paradise”? Imam [AS] said: because liking him is faith and being his enemy is blasphemy, and indeed, paradise has been created for believers and hell is for infidels, that’s why Ali [AS] is called the divider of hell and paradise, so his lovers will enter paradise and his enemies will go to hell.

As well as, there’s another narrative:

“Abasalt” has quoted that “Ma’mun” said to Imam “Reza”: why is Ali [AS] called “the divider of hell and heaven” and what does that mean? This question has made my mind busy, Imam “Reza”[AS] said: O’ “Ma’mun” didn’t you quote from your father and him from his fathers and them from “Ibn Abbas” and him from prophet [PBUH] who said I heard from prophet [PBUH] that, liking Ali [AS] is faith and being his enemy is blasphemy ? “Ma’mun” answered: yes I did, Imam Reza [AS] said: so Ali [AS] divides hell and paradise when faith and blasphemy are measured by liking or hating him, that’s why he’s the divider of hell and paradise.

“the divider of hell and paradise” in poets’ poetry

Many poets have used of this narrative in their poetry in that last centuries:

Al mustadrak, V 3, p 80

Ali [AS] is the divider of hell and benefactor, and it’s so good that we’ll be survived from the hell on the day of resurrection

Prophet [PBUH] is like a sun in his religion and after him, Ali [AS] is shiny like moon.

“Neishabury” says:

The virtues, Ibn Shar Asub, v 1, 314

So the city of knowledge that he’s in there is bright

So his enemy is the most miserable person on the day of resurrection and his lover will be favored on that day.

“Ammar ibn taqliyah” says:

Liking Ali [AS] is a shield against fire and he’s the divider of hell and paradise.

He’s the real successor of prophet [PBUH] and is the leader of jinn and humankind.
