Did Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) attend the event of Ghertas? If so, why did not he react against the persons that insulted him?

Answer:

 

There is no doubt that Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) attended the event of Ghertas because Imam Ali did not leave alone the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants), except necessary times, when he was sick as Sheikh Mofid (may God be well pleased with him) has written

 وَكَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَا يُفَارِقُهُ إِلَّا لِضَرُورَة.

Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) did not leave the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) except necessary times.

 

Sheikh Mofid has narrated the story of Ghertas Hadith in this way and he has said clearly that Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) was there

 

فَأَفَاقَ عليه السلام فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ: ائْتُونِي بِدَوَاةٍ وَكَتِفٍ أَكْتُبْ لَكُمْ كِتَاباً لَا تَضِلُّوا بَعْدَهُ أَبَداً. ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَامَ بَعْضُ مَنْ حَضَرَ يَلْتَمِسُ دَوَاةً وَكَتِفاً فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: ارْجِعْ فَإِنَّهُ يَهْجُرُ فَرَجَعَ وَنَدِمَ مَنْ حَضَرَهُ عَلَى مَا كَانَ مِنْهُمْ مِنَ التَّضْجِيعِ فِي إِحْضَارِ الدَّوَاةِ وَالْكَتِفِ فَتَلَاوَمُوا بَيْنَهُمْ فَقَالُوا: إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ راجِعُونَ لَقَدْ أَشْفَقْنَا مِنْ خِلَافِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ.

فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ صلي الله عليه وآله قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَ لَا نَأْتِيكَ بِكَتِفٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَدَوَاةٍ؟ فَقَالَ: أَ بَعْدَ الَّذِي قُلْتُمْ؟ لَا وَ لَكِنَّنِي أُوصِيكُمْ بِأَهْلِ بَيْتِي خَيْراً.

ثُمَّ أَعْرَضَ بِوَجْهِهِ عَنْ الْقَوْمِ فَنَهَضُوا وَبَقِيَ عِنْدَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ وَالْفَضْلُ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ خَاصَّةً.

فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ يَكُنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فِينَا مُسْتَقَرّاً بَعْدَكَ فَبَشِّرْنَا وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّا نُغْلَبُ عَلَيْهِ فَأَوْصِ بِنَا. فَقَالَ: أَنْتُمُ الْمُسْتَضْعَفُونَ مِنْ بَعْدِي. وَأَصْمَتَ فَنَهَضَ الْقَوْمُ وَهُمْ يَبْكُونَ قَدْ أَيِسُوا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صلي الله عليه وآله.

When the health of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) improved a little, he looked at the people and said ' ' ' bring ink and the skin of sheep in order to write matter so that they do not go astray forever. In such situation, the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) passed away.

 

One of the present persons stood up to do the order of Hazrat Muhammad; Umar said ' ' come back because he was saying nonsense remarks; therefore, the man refused to do it ' '. The present persons got sad because they had not performed the order of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants). They talked to each other, uttered the word of Esterja

 

«إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَ إِنَّا إِلَيْهِ راجِعُونَ»

 and were of afraid from disagreeing with the order of the messenger of God  

 

When the health of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) improved, some of them said ' ' do you let me prepare ink and skin of animal? Hazrat Muhammad bade ' ' didn 't you bring ink and the skin of animal after the remark that you said. However, I order you to behave with my Ahle Beit in a good way.

 

Then he turned his look away from the people and then the people stood up and came back their houses, but Abbas, Fazl Ben Abbas and Ali Ben Abi Taleb (peace be upon him) did not leave there.

 

Abbas said ' ' O ' the prophet of God! If the caliphate be left to us after you, you know that we will win; annunciate and guide us. The messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) bade ' ' you will be unlucky after me and he said nothing more ' '. These few persons left the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) as they were hopelessly and with crying eyes.

Hence, there is no doubt that Hazrat Muhammad attended in the event of Ghertas. However, why did Hazrat Muhammad remain silent and he did not answer the persons that insulted the messenger of God?

 

To answer this question, several points should be taken into account:

 

The honor of surpassing the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants):

 

According to the first verse of Hujuraat Surah, surpassing the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) is prohibited and the Muslims have no such right to surpass Hazrat Muhammad (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) in his presence 


يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنُوا لا تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ وَ رَسُولِهِ وَ اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَميعٌ عَليم‏. 

 

ut not yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger; but fear Allah: for Allah is He Who hears and knows all things.

Al-Hujuraat/ verse 1

 

Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) was always the absolute obedient and follower of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) and he never surpassed the prophet of God neither the prophet nor action as Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) has bade in Nahj Al-Balaghe

 

وَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ مَوْضِعِي مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ (صلي الله عليه وآله) بِالْقَرَابَةِ الْقَرِيبَةِ وَالْمَنْزِلَةِ الْخَصِيصَةِ وَضَعَنِي فِي حِجْرِهِ وَأَنَا وَلَدٌ يَضُمُّنِي إِلَى صَدْرِهِ وَيَكْنُفُنِي فِي فِرَاشِهِ وَيُمِسُّنِي جَسَدَهُ وَيُشِمُّنِي عَرْفَهُ وَكَانَ يَمْضَغُ الشَّيْ‏ءَ ثُمَّ يُلْقِمُنِيهِ وَمَا وَجَدَ لِي كَذْبَةً فِي قَوْلٍ وَلَا خَطْلَةً فِي فِعْلٍ وَلَقَدْ قَرَنَ اللَّهُ بِهِ (صلي الله عليه وآله) مِنْ لَدُنْ أَنْ كَانَ فَطِيماً أَعْظَمَ مَلَكٍ مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِهِ يَسْلُكُ بِهِ طَرِيقَ الْمَكَارِمِ وَمَحَاسِنَ أَخْلَاقِ الْعَالَمِ لَيْلَهُ وَنَهَارَهُ وَلَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَتَّبِعُهُ اتِّبَاعَ الْفَصِيلِ أَثَرَ أُمِّهِ يَرْفَعُ لِي فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِهِ عَلَماً وَيَأْمُرُنِي بِالِاقْتِدَاءِ بِهِ.

 

You consider my position in a special rank regarding my close kinship with the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants)  .The prophet invited me to his room and when I was child, he held me; he had me sleep in his special bed; he clung his body to me; he had me smell his pleasant smell; sometimes he put food into my mouth in morsels and he never found any lies in my remarks and any mistakes in my mistakes in my behaviors.   


When the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) was not breast fed any longer more, God ordered his greatest angel (Gabriel) to train the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) so that he guides right paths , honesty and good manners.

 

I was always with the prophet as a child was with his mother. The prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) taught me one of good characteristics every day and he ordered me to follow it.

Nahaj Al-Balaghe (Sobhi Saleh), p 300, Sermon 192

 

He has also bade in the sermon 197 

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَ الْمُسْتَحْفَظُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ (صلي الله عليه وآله) أَنِّي لَمْ أَرُدَّ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا عَلَى رَسُولِهِ سَاعَةً قَطُّ وَلَقَدْ وَاسَيْتُهُ بِنَفْسِي فِي الْمَوَاطِنِ الَّتِي تَنْكُصُ فِيهَا الْأَبْطَالُ وَتَتَأَخَّرُ فِيهَا الْأَقْدَامُ نَجْدَةً أَكْرَمَنِي اللَّهُ بِهَا.

The companions of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) that were keepers of his secrets knew that I was not against the order of God and his messenger , but I helped him with my whole being. When the brave troops sacred and escaped, God granted me courage and manliness.

 Nahaj Al-Balaghe (Sobhi Saleh), p 311, Sermon 197

 

Was it possible that Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) started talking and disagreed with the clear verse of the Quran before the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) talked?

 

According to the mentioned verse, surpassing the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) is prohibited and if Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) had talked before the messenger of God, in fact he would disagree with the clear words of this verse.

 

However, if the messenger of God had ordered to shut the mouth of the persons that insulted, Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) would have definitely obeyed him and defended him with the whole of his being. When the messenger of God attended and he did nothing; how may Amir Momenan have surpassed Hazrat Ali and he may have acted against the words of the Quran?

 

The honor of the fight in the presence of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants):

 

God has considered any kinds of struggle and fight haram in the presence of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) in the verse 46 of the AnfaAl Surah

 وَأَطيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلا تَنازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ ريحُكُمْ وَاصْبِرُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرين‏.

 

And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere.

Al-Anfaal/ verse 46

 

And he has bade in another verse

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنُوا لا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْواتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَلا تَجْهَرُوا لَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ كَجَهْرِ بَعْضِكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ أَنْ تَحْبَطَ أَعْمالُكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لا تَشْعُرُون‏.

 

O ye who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk, as ye may speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds become vain and ye perceive not.

 Al-Hujuraat / verse 2

 

It has been said in the narration of Bokhari

فَاخْتَلَفُوا وَكَثُرَ اللَّغَطُ قال قُومُوا عَنِّي ولا يَنْبَغِي عِنْدِي التَّنَازُعُ.

They struggled and made fuss. The prophet bade ' ' leave me alone. It is not appropriate to fight in the presence of the prophet.

It has been said in another narration

 فَتَنَازَعُوا ولا يَنْبَغِي عِنْدَ نَبِيٍّ تَنَازُعٌ.

They struggled although it was not appropriate that they struggled in the presence of the prophet.

If Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) had answered them and insisted on having ink and pen and he would have had to struggle with them and it was not appropriate to struggle in the presence of the prophet. Hence, Amir Momenan -(peace be upon him) waited for the order of the messenger of God (  peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) and he refused to struggle with the persons that insulted and to raise his voice in the presence of the messenger of God ( peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants). In other words, answering back was an unpleasant action (in the presence of the messenger of God) and definitely, Amir Momenan did not do such unpleasant action.

 

These two answers are the real answers of the Shiite scientists to the persons that present this doubt.

 

A group of present persons in the house, persons that agree with writing the will:

 

It has been said in the text of the Ghertas narration

 

منهم من يقول قَرِّبُوا يَكْتُبْ لَكُمْ النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كِتَابًا لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدَهُ وَمِنْهُمْ من يقول ما قال عُمَرُ.

A group of persons said ' ' bring a sheet of paper so that the prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) can write a book for you and you do not go astray after him. Some of them repeated the remark of Umar.

Al-Bokhari Al-Jaafi, Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ben Esmaeel (died in 256 hejira), Sahih Al-Bokhari, v 4 p 1612 hadith 4168, Ketab Al-Maghazi, chapter Maraz Al-Nabi, v 5 p 2146 hadith 5345, Ketab Al-Marzi, chapter Ghaol Al-Mariz Ghaomu Anni , v 6 p 2680 hadith 6932, Ketab Al-Etesam Bel Ketab va Al-Sonat, chapter Kerahiyat Al-Ekhtelaf , Researched by: D. However, the Sunni scientists claim that answering back Umar has been a good action and Umar has made a mistake. We would like to ask why hasn 't Amir Momenan (peace be upon) been considered as one of persons that has answered back?

 

According to the absolute obey Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) from messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) and his insistence on this good action, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was one of persons that insisted on writing the letter.

Hence, if the Sunni scientists say ' ' Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) should have answered the persons that insulted and this had been a good action, Amir Momenan ( peace be upon him) must have been one of persons that agreed with bringing ink and pen and insisted on this action.

Revealing the real personality of the persons that claimed caliphate:

 

There is another probability that the purpose of the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) from this order was to reveal the real personality of the persons that claimed caliphate after him and they had applied their entire try to achieve it from many years ago.

 

The messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) wanted to make the Muslims do not have competency and decency to organize the Islamic society and they can not undertake

 

According to the close relationship of Amir Momenan (peace be upon him) with the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants), he was definitely aware of this matter; therefore, he waited for remarks of the messenger of God and refused from any actions. 


The end of with the Muslims:

 

In fact, the messenger of God (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) wanted to demonstrate the lack of ability of the companions  

 

قال قُومُوا عَنِّي قال عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ فَكَانَ بن عَبَّاسٍ يقول إِنَّ الرَّزِيَّةَ كُلَّ الرَّزِيَّةِ ما حَالَ بين رسول اللَّهِ

(ص) وَبَيْنَ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ لهم ذلك الْكِتَابَ من اخْتِلَافِهِمْ وَلَغَطِهِمْ.

The prophet (peace of Allah be upon him and his descendants) bade ' ' leave me alone ' '; Ibn Abbas said ' ' the most terrible plight was that they separated between the prophet and writing letter with disagreement and noise.
